The Sea to Sky Corridor separates Vancouver from Whistler by 120 kilometres of coastal fjord, alpine forest, and glaciated peaks — a route that climbs 675 metres from tidewater to subalpine plateau in under 40 minutes by air.
Fixed-wing seaplanes and turbine helicopters have served the corridor since 1982, when Whistler's hotel capacity doubled ahead of the provincial Expo and ground transit could not meet weekend demand. Today the Vancouver Harbour Flight Centre logs more than 4,200 scenic and charter departures annually, most departing between dawn and mid-afternoon when thermal stability and visibility favour visual flight rules.
A helicopter ride from Vancouver to Whistler follows the granite escarpment of the Coast Mountains northward over Howe Sound, a glacial trough that reaches 300 metres deep and is flanked by the basalt cliffs of the Stawamus Chief and the hanging valleys of Shannon Falls. The flight path crosses Britannia Beach, where copper tailings stain the shoreline ochre, then climbs the Cheakamus Canyon to Garibaldi Provincial Park. Mount Garibaldi itself rises 2,678 metres above sea level, its dacite dome sculpted by Pleistocene ice and still capped by the Garibaldi Névé, a remnant ice field visible year-round. Pilots maintain a cruising altitude of 1,500 to 2,000 metres, threading the col between Atwell Peak and The Black Tusk before descending into the Fitzsimmons Creek drainage and Whistler's heliport.
The corridor's weather window is tightest between November and March, when Pacific frontal systems stall against the range and ceiling heights drop below 600 metres. Summer and early autumn deliver the longest daylight and the clearest sightlines toward the volcanic plugs of Garibaldi and the serrated ridge of Tantalus Range. Charter operators at the harbour terminal offer both point-to-point transfers — luggage and skis included — and extended panorama loops that add the Indian Arm fjord, the Capilano watershed, and the granite batholith of the Lions. Most seaplane transfers use de Havilland Turbine Otters configured for six to nine passengers; helicopter charters deploy Eurocopter AS350 and Bell 407 airframes with three to six seats. No gate fee applies at the terminal, though float-plane parking incurs a per-operation charge absorbed into charter pricing. The facility operates around the clock, though noise abatement protocols restrict departures from Burrard Inlet between 22:00 and 06:00 except for emergency medical and Coast Guard sorties.
